Not what Orange Theory expected!

Standard

The other day the good folks at Orange Theory fitness asked us all to write a “bucket list” item on a sticky note and place it on the board for all to see. I am almost certain they wanted us to write stuff like “fit in my wedding dress again” or “wear my old college jeans” but those are not anywhere on my bucket list.

cake

I made this bad boy! Thanks Orange Theory!

Once they handed me my square of paper what I wrote next was a no-brainer! I have always wanted to make a vinatarta cake! This is a very special cake to me. As a kid it was the very first cake I ever ate a wedding, Lynn and Larry Henry’s wedding to be exact. I remember it so clearly and how we got a little piece to take home to slip under our pillows (it was wrapped in cling film) with the promise¬† you would dream of your future husband/wife. I am not sure if mine ever made under the pillow because it tasted so damn good. I always thought I would have vinatarta at our wedding but didn’t, perhaps for our 25th anniversary.

For years I have built up in my head that making this cake would be impossible and that you needed special tools imported from Iceland to make it properly. Today I said “To hell with it Odlum, today you make this cake!” After a little Pinterest search I discovered no special tools are required, just a lot of patience! Here is the recipe I used – Vinatarta Cake!

Long story short, tackling the “unbakeable cake” or breaking an 8 minute mile or all that other stuff you think you can’t do…it’s all a joke because you can! Plus, your house will smell amazing afterwards #Almond Extract!

Jumping Jack Push Ups are BAD ASS! I know they sound terrible but hot damn they are effective for an end of work out burn out exercise! Start with 6 and add 2 every time. We did these at the gym today and I can already feel them in my shoulders.

I tried out a power lifting gym this week and it was cool but I wasn’t sore at all afterwards. I will give 2 more tries before I make a decision.

I think I covered off food above ūüôā

Channeling my inner Adell!

Standard

This week has been all sorts of fun – it started with the Country Music Awards of Ontario at the Flato theatre in Markham. It was a super cool night, good music and interesting people. what I wasn’t expecting was a lack of cowboy hats and people complaining they had run out of wine glasses and had to drink beer…YOU ARE COWBOYS!

graffitiThen on Wednesday we had friends in from Canmore – Cam and Karina (also important to remember for later)! We went to Gusto 101 for supper and Sweet Jesus for dessert. I got to dinner a little early and was able to wander around “graffiti alley” which is essentially an instagramer’s wet dream!

Then we on Thursday we went to the Balmy Beach Canoe club and had a lesson in kayaking – we were certain we were going to be pros but didn’t realize it was “competition style” kayaks and not Canadian Tire specials. We both capsized into pretty gross, goose poop filled water but n the flip-side met some truly awesome people.

Then on Friday…stay with me..I am getting to Adell…we met up with friends from Winnipeg for supper at Pizzeria Libertto and then went to Roselle‘s for dessert! It was so great seeing our friends even if it was only for a couple hours, it’s nice being around people who just get you.

So, Adell…this week I had some personal high’s and low’s and we all have that friend who is always ready to get into trouble with you, fires you up, who agrees with you¬† whenDelly you say “that bitch was crazy right” and makes the most mundane things so much better like the 45 minute car ride home every day! Well that is my Adell – and what she doesn’t know is this week when I wasn’t really channeling my warrior spirit, I would say under my breath “Get your shit together and channel your inner Adell” and just like that I jumped into a limo instead of taking my car to the CMAO’s, laughed off falling in the water and most of all didn’t cry when I saw my friends. Thank you my sweet Adell –my much braver,¬† funnier, kinder person than I will ever¬† be and on top of it all, with the superior rack, I couldn’t ask for a better friend/doppelganger/secret motivator!

Fun:

My friend Susan (pictured above also cradling Adell’s bosom) told me recently that I had slipped into isolation madness for what I am about to say but I stand by it…Call me Fitz is a funny Canadian show that didn’t get it’s day! It’s true, I am biased because I worked with one of the cast members (Huse Madhavji back in the A-Channel days) but Jason Priestly is very funny in the series and it’s quirky — the complete series can be found on CraveTV

Fitness:

My fitness has hit a bit of road block these days – so I am struggling to find something to write here — I have been plagued with aches and pains and a fickle lower back. I have been trying to foam roll every night (ok, every other night) but it’s not working. I am finally going to go to the doctor tomorrow where I fully expect them to say I have gout — well, that is what Derek and Dr. Wikipedia say is wrong with me. TBDmilk

Food:

When waiting in the epic line at Sweet Jesus with Cam and Karina, Karina told me that she makes her own almond milk – at first I thought “who has time for that?” and “that is some next level hipster nonsense” ….so ya, I did it and it is AMAZING!!! It is a little bit of work but the end product is better than store bought and it tastes like melted vanilla ice cream! Do it, do it now and tell your friends!

Fashion:

Summer has officially hit the T-dot and my little production booth at work is essentially a hot-box and I sweat constantly. It is super unattractive and I am severely stressing about August and under-boob sweat –besides back pain, under-boob sweat is the leading reason why I would get a boob job. So, I am in search of the perfect professional tank/sleeveless top. Any suggestions?

In the meantime, I am opting for skirts to try and minimize butt sweat — I am not joking when I say it is hot in that unventilated room with direct sun!

I bought this skirt from Joe Fresh at $24 it’s a steal, and this skirt from Mountain Equipment Co-op (yup MEC), it was pricey at $59 but it is so crazy soft and made of organic cotton. Plus, I plan on buying some Birkenstock sandals this summer to fully revert back to my 90’s ways.

Cracks in the foundation – return to Sociology class

Standard

I have been deliberately not writing my blog in fear of just writing about how incredibly sad I feel 24/7 and getting placed on a psych hold or worse, writing about how my life is super-awesome which would be a lie.

Here is the deal, I have cried almost every day for the past 3 months – change is hard and new is exhausting. It’s not that Toronto is the worst place on earth, far from it, it’s just I have been bogged down with guilt over leaving Manitoba, consumed by a death in the family coupled with major family stresses and then I got injured (dislocated my hand and put my back out)…it hasn’t been great.

So, how do I rally back? Thanks to a sociology class I took in 1992 at the University of Manitoba I have all the tools I need to re-group – Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to the rescue! When times have gotten tough in the past¬† I have always returned to this pyramid to find me.

maslows-hierarchy-of-needs

Here’s how it works – you make a list of the actual basic priorities you need to create balance in your life, you start with the base (the biggest part of the pyramid) and start building up. My basic needs are: good sleep, healthy food, working out, prayer and friendship. Once those are in place I add in adventure, sex and creativity (They are all exclusive of each other, easy does it you perverts! LOL) and so on. Then hopefully confidence and inner potential will return (I miss you old friend). None of this happens over night but it will work – here comes strict bed times, good nosh and consistent workouts, then phase 2.

Just a note to anyone who I may have lost at “prayer” -if you are a none believer that is totally cool – just try, just once, laying in bed and thinking about all the things your are thankful for – no amen necessary! It feels good to think of good things before you sleep.

On to other business!

Fun:

I went Axe throwing today and it was super BAD ASS! It was harder than I thought it would be and actually a good core work-out because while you are laughing your butt off! Ok, I will admit I was a little jacked up because they had ACDC on blast and you know that fires me up!

Food:

Apparently the new super food trend to watch for is “Lucuma”. It is a fruit from Peru which looks like if a mango and an avocado had a baby.¬† I bought it in powder form from pulpa-de-lucumaBulk Barn ($13) and it has a very caramel-like flavour. You can use it as a sweetener in smoothies, baking and to make ice creams.¬† It has a super low glycemic index so insulin spikes won’t be a concern. I liked it, didn’t love it, haven’t given up on it yet.

Fitness:

I have been working out at home a lot lately which is fun because I get to play MY music crazy loud but it’s also a little lonely – I can’t wait for spring and daylight lasts past 5pm! But at the moment I am obsessed with the dumbbell squat presses. It gets me super sweaty and works the whole body!

Check out this video for technique:

Fashion:

I am in love with the white blazer with ripped jeans look! The best one I could find was at Le Chawhte blazerteau, it is a bit of budget buster at $139 but it is totally gorgeous!

Oh and as I am heading to the Cayman Islands soon I have become obsessed with rompers! Yes, rompers! It’s all in one and they feel like pajamas! I bought my first one from Old Navy http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=112879022&vid=1&locale=en_US&kwid=1&sem=false&sdkw=jersey-knit-romper-P112879&brandCvoSid=MDA2DT2764ZZ&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oldnavy.com%2Fproducts%2Frompers.jsp

Ask me those 6 questions again – I have new answers!

Standard

Lots of big news to report this week!

For the past 2 weeks I have been filling in on the morning show with Frankie Hollywood at Energy 106. It is completely different from anything I have ever done before and it has been a lot ofEnergy106fm fun. The staff are super nice, the music keeps you moving and I can’t complain about the 6 minute drive to the station! I am very grateful to Adam West for giving me the opportunity and damn, that guy is hilarious! He has achieved the Fiona Odlum stamp of approval “Good Egg Status” -it’s basically like winning an Oscar. I will be there for one more week and then I am off to Investors Group Field! Why you say?

Opportunity has come a knocking and to quote my dear friend Tom Milroy “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you can’t say no” and fifa-womens-world-cup-2015he is absolutely right. So, starting mid-April I will be the new Communications Coordinator working with the Canadian Soccer Association as they host the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 here in Winnipeg and I couldn’t be more thrilled. It is a new endeavor and the event is going to take Winnipeg by storm! Seriously, when does Women’s sport at this level EVER get played in our home town? These women are amazing athletes, great community leaders and fantastic role models – if you wanna feel inspired, you gotta see them play!!! Yes, it’s true I am a soccer freak and I have played it for many years so I am slightly biased but honestly you will have goose bumps watching these women play!

I will also be filling in again for a couple shifts back on the Wheeler morning show as Jenna Khan is going on holiday later this month. I’ll keep you posted on the dates.

But that’s not it. Derek and I agree, when the World Cup is over it will be the perfect time to make the move out to Toronto. So in saying that, the realtor has been contacted, the house is getting listed in 2 weeks and I will be making the pilgrimage with the pups in tow (people keep asking me if I am taking the dogs with me and they clearly are off their meds because I would sooner die than re-home the loves of my life. No seriously that is beyond dumb, don’t speak to me!) and the move will happen at the beginning of July.pups and me

Having a moving date has given me structure, peace of mind and anxiety! If I was the Manitoba Flood Forecaster I would start planning on sandbagging the Red and the Assiniboine rivers because my tears will be of epic proportions. Sorry Hoop & Holler, you are getting flooded out!

So there it is, a new adventure is starting and the move is on. Now, I’m going to put on my lip gloss and pretend that I am totally psyched about it. I am also going to get as many work-outs in as I can at Aspire before I leave, best stress reliever ever…speaking of which, the squat rack is calling my name. Have a wonderful Easter weekend and be good my friends!

I’m back….for one week!

Standard

Oh the stories I have to share with you…I was asked to do some fill-in work next week on Wheeler in the Morning on City, Drew is taking a much deserved holiday so I will be hanging out with Jenna out on remote for the entire week! I am really looking forward to it and the segments we have lined up will be super fun – um hello, we are making BEER! I will be going to the speedway, something fun with dogs, I also want to sneak in a bakery or 2 (Sleepy Owl and Chew’s new bakery I am looking at you!) and a whole bunch of stuff. If you have any ideas I am all ears!

Last week, I was out in Toronto which was supposed to be strictly for funsies but I ended up having a couple meetings with

DT and I hanging out by Lake Ontario!

potential employers. I gotta say, everyone I have met out there has been lovely, I mean I would of course love them more if they said “You’re hired!” but either way it’s been a pretty positive experience. I should also say, if the right opportunity came along in Winnipeg, Regina, Vancouver but never you Lethbridge (you know what you did) I would be on the move, Derek and I agree we can weather any storm.

But today I got the most amazing surprise! There I was sitting on my couch chatting with DT on the phone and I see the mailman walk up with a parcel wrapped in the tell-tell Zulily wrapping and I

I am truly blessed to have friends who care and send me surprise sweaters!

said “I didn’t order anything?”, I open it and see the sweater I was drooling over and posted right her on my blog. I asked DT “Did you send me this?” and he paused and said “No, but I know who did!” and he told me it was from his longtime school chum Bridget. Bridget and I met years ago and have chatted over the years via FB so to get this parcel seriously knocked me on my ass! I left her a hysterical voice mail of me crying and thanking her for the amazing surprise, I can’t wait til we talk and I will try to keep my emotions in check!!!! Seriously, how insanely thoughtful!!! And now I am crying again……thank you Bridget!

Ok, I have composed myself! Lately, I have been trying really hard to ween myself off of potatoes which isn’t considered paleo and switch to sweet potato full time. So far so good, sweet potatoes do cook faster so that is good and they do caramelize nicely which is an added bonus but they just don’t taste great as fries. I am a big fan of anything I can call little packages so this recipe covers all the bases….wrapped in foil, chicken and sweet potato, you can’t lose!¬† http://busy-mommy.com/2014/05/honey-bbq-bacon-chicken-sweet-potato-packets.html#_a5y_p=2414407

I have been tempting fate a little bit lately and trying to do more oblique work – so far my body hasn’t completely rejected me. For those of you who don’t know, I have troubles with my liver and

inside. It is very painful at times and I have had surgery to resolve some of the issues but before you send me any smoothie recipes or cleanses or pills none of that will work, it is a genetic, 1 in a 1,000,000 abnormality, you can’t fix me.

Also fitness related, did you know that Carrie Underwood has her own line of work-out gear? It’s called CALIA and I bought these tights and I FREAKING LOVE THEM!

Finally, in other news I watching the flicks The Kingsmen and Run all night, if you have $12 to burn spend it on Run all night – I know you are saying “But Fiona, isn’t it just Taken 4?” and I will say “No”. Liam Neeson is vulnerable, believable and who ever played his son in the movie is really good! Go check it out!

Be good my friends.

The Big Smoke, b-ball, bosses and blouses!

Standard

Oh what a week! I flew out to Toronto this week to visit my hubby at his new condo and to start making actual face to face connections with potential employers.

I was super excited to get to hang out with DT and have him tour me around Toronto but I will be honest, I was CRAZY nervous about meeting the people who may or may not determine sweaterif I get to maintain my online shopping addiction (ie. have disposable cash to spend on that damn sweater I have been eyeballing on Zulily for over 3 months – see right) or continue to keep my pocket book closed for business (UGH! I need that sweater!).

I’m not going to go into detail about the meetings but I can safely say one was better than all the others! There is now hope where there was none before! When I was getting really stressed this week I kept reminding myself of the famous Babe Ruth quote “Every strike brings me closer to the next home run”, it will come, I just have to believe. I feel like a walking self-help book!¬† BUT here is the deal, I am open to anything right now, even right here in Winnipeg. In the meantime, if anyone has part-time work I am available – mama needs to stay busy and Ruby and Lewi are getting really sick of me! Make me an offer!

While in TO we caught up with one of Derek’s longtime friends Orlando Magic v Toronto Raptors, Game 3and checked out a Raptors game! Now, I am going to get into a lot of local trouble in saying this but….Raptors fans are pretty GREAT and they may be better than Jets fans. There I said it! It’s true! The Raptors put on a great show, the seats were great, the fans were jovial, the concessions were awesome and I really enjoyed myself! Please don’t kick me out of Pegcity – Bomber fans you are still #1!

But the real thing that has been bothering me lately is all this fantastic news I have been missing in Winnipeg! We are racist, maclean-swe are drinking e.coli water, we have major concerns in our City Hall and the list goes on…and I can’t cover any of it!!! It is killing me! Ok, the fact we are racist isn’t “fantastic” but I am so glad it is being talked about¬† and sitting on the sideline blows. Whether you agree with the statement about our province is neither here nor there, I applaud the coverage it has gotten and I hope it has sparked good/healthy conversations in your home.

Lately I have been experimenting in the kitchen and these 2 recipes are keepers – Melt in your mouth Greek yogurt smothered chicken http://lovintheoven.com/?s=melt+in+your+mouth+chicken and sweet potato crust quiche http://www.fourteenforty365.com/2014/04/weekend-meal-prep.html?m=1 Give ’em a whirl and let me know if they worked for you too!

When I was in Toronto I bought this top in baby blue (colour not shown here)¬†http://www.hm.com/ca/product/39750?article=39750-D and according to every store we checked out “Tomato red” is the colour of spring. I’m not sure how I feel about that!

Finally to recap, the week was a bit of a roller coaster for me and at times it got the better of me — but at the end of the day I have to remind myself that I am stepping waaaaaaaaaaaaaayy out of my comfort zone so, I can’t expect everyday to be perfect. Plus, once again this week I am reminded that without my team of family+friends standing right behind me, beside me and leading the way, I would have cracked a long time ago. I am grateful and I do not take your kindness, support and leadership for granted.

Be good!

Change is in the wind!

Standard

As faithful readers you know I have been planning a move out to Toronto to follow my delicious husband! Ya, that’s right, I called him delicious, those of you who are fans of the TV show “The Goldbergs” you know of which I speak! Oh, Beverly!

The plan all along was he would head out east first and I would continue working here in peg-city until I was able to find a gig out there too! Failing that, I would go to school in the fall at the U of T where I have already been accepted, huzzah!

I will be honest, I wanted to be with my delicious DT immediately but it meant leaving everyone behind and the best job I think I truly ever had which I wasn’t really quiet ready to do. Well…. that all changed on Tuesday with one simple sentence “Today was Breakfast Television’s last show”!

The feelings of surprise, shock, bewilderment, liberation, anxiety, relief and optimism hit my body like……WHOA NELLY!What is coming no one knows! After the shock wore off it was weird because I wasn’t really sad about losing my job, I was sad because now the move was right there, looking at me like a gigantic pre-teen zit!

So, after the trigger was pulled I called DT and he booked the earliest flight back to Winnipeg and a big thanks goes to TSN for helping make that happen – I don’t know you but you sound like good peeps! Plus, over the past few days I have been reaching out to folks letting them know about what has happened and lots of people have been reaching out to me too which, sweet Jesus feels incredible! You have no idea how much power a simple text has over your heart! So, with all of that going on it has lifted my fears of moving and to be honest –I think I am kind of starting to get excited! YUP – I…am…excited!

I am also excited about the new show at Citytv! I know I am treading in dangerous waters here and I mean no disrespect to anyone who was part the BT family because I truly love you.  Wheeler and his gang have built a huge name, reputation and very loyal following. They deserve this moment, they have worked really hard and their talents are undeniable.

Enough about those jerks (I kid) this is about me! As in every life event and for the purpose of this blog here is what I have learned in the past 3 days: 1) I am stronger than this challenge and this challenge is making me stronger! 2) My true friends are super bad-ass and I love them dearly!

Move forward and just jump!

Move forward and just jump!

3) I am ready to pop that gross giant zit and make the move out east and 4) In the words of my dear Eva Kovacs I now believe I can take the leap and trust the net will appear.

I feel your love, support and I hear your blessings.

In other news – I have dropped another 3 pounds and I bought
